Extra state fees guide

The state fees on top of the filing fee

Checked 4 November 2026

On top of the filing fee, a few states add a card fee when you pay online, such as Texas, Wyoming and Oklahoma, and New York, Nebraska and Arizona can require a newspaper notice. Faster filing and certified copies are optional. Below is what each costs, taken from each state's own site.

Fees some states require

A few states add something every new company pays on top of the filing fee: a card fee for paying online, or a notice in the newspapers. These are the ones we've confirmed on the states' own sites so far.

Card fees

Some states pass their card processing costs on to the filer. We file online and pay the state by card, so where a state adds this fee, it's part of what forming costs.

StateWhat it addsLLC fee with it
IllinoisIllinois adds a payment processor fee to every card payment, and doesn't publish the amount. Confirmed for LLCs.Amount not published
MassachusettsMassachusetts adds $20 to filings made online. Confirmed for LLCs.$520 ($500 fee)
MissouriMissouri adds a small convenience fee to card and e-check payments, and doesn't publish the amount.Amount not published
New HampshireNew Hampshire adds a $2 handling charge to every fee paid online.$102 ($100 fee)
OklahomaOklahoma adds 4% when the fee is paid by card.$104 ($100 fee)
TexasTexas adds $0.25 plus 2.25% when the fee is paid by card online.$307 ($300 fee)
WyomingWyoming adds 2.4%, at least $1, when the fee is paid by card online.$102.40 ($100 fee)

Arkansas. Arkansas takes card payments for online filings and doesn't publish a card processing fee, so one may be added at checkout. If it is, it's passed on at cost.

Newspaper notices

  • Arizona. Arizona requires a notice in a newspaper in the agent's county within 60 days, unless the agent's street address is in a county of more than 800,000 people. There, the state posts it online instead.
  • Nebraska. Nebraska requires a new LLC or corporation to publish a notice for three weeks in a row in a legal newspaper near its office, then file proof with the state ($25 online). The newspaper sets its own price.
  • New York. New York requires a new LLC to publish a notice in newspapers within 120 days, then file a $50 Certificate of Publication. The newspapers set their own prices, which vary by county.

The newspapers' prices aren't set by the state, so no fee table can show them. Ask the newspaper, or ask us before you order.

Faster filing

Many states sell faster processing on top of the filing fee. It's optional, and worth it only when you need the company formed by a date, for example to sign a contract or open a bank account.

Certified copies and certificates

A certified copy is a copy of your filed document stamped by the state. No state we've checked requires one to form, but some banks ask for one. A good standing certificate (also called a certificate of existence or status) shows the company exists and is up to date with the state. You may need one to register the company in another state, or for a bank.

How we quote these fees

  • Your order shows the state's fee with any card fee it adds, passed on at cost.
  • Where a state requires a newspaper notice, we tell you what it will cost before you pay.
  • Need it sooner? Tick faster filing in your order, and we confirm the speed and the state's fee with you.
  • We never add our own margin to a state's fee.

Questions people ask about extra state fees

Do I need a certified copy to form an LLC?

No state we've checked requires one to form. It's optional: some banks ask for one when you open an account. Kansas includes one with every filing.

Do you charge extra for faster filing?

No. Where a state sells faster filing, you pay the state's own fee, passed on at cost, and we confirm the speed with you before you pay.

Which states don't sell faster filing?

Florida doesn't offer it, and Indiana charges no expedite fees. In Wyoming there's no need, since online filings are active immediately, and Kansas processes online filings within minutes. Minnesota expedites online filings at its online price.

Is the card fee charged on top of your price?

It's the state's charge, not ours. When we pay the state online, any card fee it adds is passed on at cost, and the total is shown before you pay.

Who pays for a newspaper notice?

The company does, to the newspapers, which set their own prices. In New York that's after forming, within 120 days, plus the state's $50 Certificate of Publication. We tell you what it will cost before you pay.
